FACTORY LIVING is a documentary photo series and newspaper publication by Petra Valdimarsdóttir, offering a glimpse into the underground fish factories of China. Both photographer and designer, Petra presents a visual narrative of a rarely seen part of the global fishing industry, capturing the spaces, routines, and workers behind seafood production.
The project began during a trip to China in 2009, when Petra was commissioned to photograph fish for a website she was designing for a client. What started as a design project soon evolved into a deeper exploration of the industry itself. Traveling from factory to factory, she documented the environments where fish were processed for export, meeting the people working behind the scenes.
The series has been published as a newspaper-format publication, designed by Petra herself. This format reflects the fast-paced and ever-moving nature of the industry, emphasizing its role in the global supply chain.
With FACTORY LIVING, Petra invites the audience to take a closer look at a world that remains largely unseen, highlighting the people and processes that keep it running.
